This year’s Houston Family Law Trial Institute incorporates new, improved, and more sophisticated fact patterns into its time-tested format, teaching skills and techniques that make family law lawyers more effective in the courtroom – not just in the actual trial, but in motion practice before, during, and following the trial as well.
During the Houston Family Law Trial Institute, attendees will develop and hone their skills in planning the theme of a case and developing evidence to present at trial. Through rigorous one-on-one workshops with immediate feedback from experienced family law litigators and family law judges, attendees will learn more powerful ways to craft and present their opening statement and closing argument, have opportunities to practice and enhance their proficiency in conducting direct and cross examination of witnesses and experts, and be able to perfect their evidentiary objections. At the conclusion of the intensive 8-day Houston Family Law Trial Institute, each attendee conducts an entire family law trial, and within two weeks of returning home receives a DVD recording of every minute of his/her participation (including the family law trial) and his/her associated critiques of that participation.
What attendees learn in the Houston Family Law Trial Institute can help them become successful negotiators as well. Colleagues who learn that an attorney has completed the Houston Family Law Trial Institute will know that attorney has developed more powerful trial skills and has gained significant negotiating power; that attorney is ready and able to try his/her case.
The Houston Family Law Trial Institute offers the REGULAR PROGRAM and an ADVANCED PROGRAM: The Regular Program (May 12 through19) and The Advanced Program (May 14 through 17). Additional details about each Program are provided below:
- The Regular Program is limited to 48 attendees who are broken into groups of 6 to 8 attendees based on their number of years in practice and their family law litigation experience. Limiting the class size to 6 to 8 attendees allows for a maximum amount of individualized instruction and limits the number of attorneys on each side of the hypothetical family law case to four. Each attendee gets more "on your feet" time to develop, use, and hone advocacy skills under the tutelage and guidance of at least two Faculty members in the classroom. All exercises are electronically recorded – and the attendee reviews his/her performance in private with another Faculty member immediately following his/her exercise.
-
The Advanced Program, focusing on child custody issues is limited to six attendees. Many of the Advanced Program attendees completed the Regular Program within the previous three years, although such previous enrollment is not required.
Sign up early. Do not miss the opportunity. Classes limited to 6-8 in the basic program.
Very special lodging arrangements have been made with the Four Seasons Hotel Houston (713-652-6266 or 800-819-5053), which is only a couple of blocks away from South Texas College of Law.
